Kidblog!

The students love checking in with our classroom blog and have really shown an interest in starting one of their own.  The students are very excited to get started on their very own blog!  Stay tuned as our blogging journey is just beginning...

Each student has been set up with their own blog using the Kidblog forum.

Students will begin with a 1st Blog, by partaking in a '5 Sentence challenge'.  I am also looking forward to having them write about some of the great learning that we are doing.

Parents, be sure to ask your child to show off their blog posts to you.

Happy Blogging Everyone!

Jump Rope for Heart 2015!

Upper Canada Village & Other News

Just a reminder that Friday is our Grade 3 field trip to Upper Canada Village.  Please ensure that students arrive at school for 8:00 a.m. as the buses are leaving at 8:15 a.m. sharp.  Students should be dressed for the weather (hats, sunscreen, rain boots/jacket if the forecast calls for rain).
Students are asked to bring a lunch, snacks and a water bottle.  Students are welcome to bring a small amount of money for the gift shop if they wish.  We ask that students shop and purchase any items that they wish at some point throughout the day and not at the very end of the day as that will be a busy time (if you will not be joining us on the trip, please remind your child to let the parent volunteer know that they would like to purchase something so they can schedule that into the day).  If you signed up to volunteer, you are scheduled to attend and will be assigned a small group of students. Please keep an eye out for the emails that have been sent.  There is a Google Form (Form Link) attached that we ask is filled out so that we know which volunteers will be meeting us at the school and who will be joining us once we arrive at Upper Canada Village (estimated time of arrival 9:45 a.m.).  If you have any problems accessing the Google form, please just write a quick note in your child's agenda.  The students are very excited for our End of Year trip and so are all of the teachers.  Looking forward to a fun-filled day!

In Science, we have been having a great time building Purposeful Stable Structures.  The students used recycled materials and items around the classroom and house to build structures.  On Friday we tested the stability of the structures using wind force (fans), muscular force, and tested the ability to hold a load (bean bags, dictionaries).  We will also continue our Science Stations this week.  The students are visiting each station testing out experiments, following WebQuesting and taking Science notes.  Great job!

In Math, we continue to work on multiplication and division by looking at patterns, equal groupings and repeated addition.  The students are having a lot of fun practicing their facts during Race to 100/1000, Multiplication Battle, Around the World and Fact Family Rock and Roll.  Be sure to look through the pictures in our Twitter Feed!

In Language, the students have been examining Media through the use of advertisements and have created and designed their own cereal box.  They look amazing!  Next step, will be to create a commercial for their cereal.

In Physical Education, we will be practicing our Track and Field Skills this week.  The students will be participating in Standing Long Jump, Ball Throw (using a bean bag) and some running events.  If the weather holds up, these events will take place during the last block today as well as during third block on Wednesday.

Have a wonderful week!

It's June!

We are entering into our last month of the school year.  This school year seemed to go, especially fast!  I can't believe it is June already. I want to first congratulate all of the Grade Three students for their first EQAO writing accomplishments.  I think that the students really put forth their personal best during the testing and that is all that we ask.  The students did a wonderful job with their persuasive letters to Mrs. Green (to chew peppermint gum during the testing) and therefore, were able to chew gum half way through the test for a little 'brain pick me up'.

As we move into our last month of school and as the weather gets warmer, I would like to remind students to come each day with their water bottle.  We are also running short on a few classroom items such as pencils, glue sticks, Kleenex and hand sanitizers so if your child has some of these items at home that they could bring for the last few weeks of school to keep in their cubby that would be fantastic.

In Science, we are working on how Forces act on Stable Structures.  We have been learning through a variety of Science Stations and are getting ready to create a purposeful structure from materials at home and other recyclable materials (toilet paper rolls, cardboard, etc.).  The structure that the students create will need to hold a load (e.g., bean bag, book, etc.) and withstand a force (e.g., wind, muscular force - pulling, pushing).  The students are really excited to put all of their learning and understanding into creating a purposeful structure!  Here is a link to the outline that the students are working on in class.  Design Challenge - Purposeful Structure

In Language, we are finishing up our Persuasive Literacy and Writing Unit.  In Media Literacy, we are looking at how advertising and the media use techniques to persuade and influence us.  We will be asking that students bring in their own empty cereal box to use (preferably in tact and not flattened, but we can always put it back together if needed :)).  The students will be creating their own cereal box design and using all of the advertising strategies we have been learning about in the creation of their own cereal box.  If you have some extras in your black box, please send them in too so that we can make sure everyone has their own box.  Thank you in advance!

In Math, we will continue to work on Multiplication and Divsion facts.  Students are working on their Multiplication facts in Grade 3 up to the 7 times tables.  We are playing dice games, card games and learning a new game called "Fact Family Rock and Roll" (roll 2 dice and write the Fact Family equations for those two numbers) to work on our math facts.  These are also great games to play during the Summer as a family in order to prepare for the Grade Four Math program.  Ask your child all about it!

This Thursday during last block, the Grade 3s will participate in the Jump Rope for Heart Event at St. Cecilia.  Please remember to send in your pledge forms.

On Thursday, we are asking that the students wear RED and bring a water bottle.

In Physical Education, we have been preparing for Jump Rope for Heart by practicing our skipping and putting together skipping routines in small groups.  Last week the students performed their routines and they looked great!

Happy Skipping!
