Math, Literacy and other Grade 3 Happenings

It was so nice meeting most of you Tuesday evening.  For those of you that were not able to make it, I sent home a little package that was out during the evening.  Please let me know if you have not received it and I will send home another package.

This week has been another busy week.  The students are really getting into the swing of Grade 3 and getting used to our routines and expectations. Way to go Grade 3!

Thank you for your Scholastic Orders.  I will place the order this evening so the books should be in next week.

This week in Literacy we have been focusing on Recounts.  We have read some example recount texts as well as written recounts of a Favourite Summer Memory and a recount of their Weekend.

We have also read some other great stories this week and have been discussing Author's Message, Author's Purpose (P.I.E. - To Persuade, Inform or Entertain), Making Meaningful Connections and looking for examples of past tense verbs (P.T.V.)  and time order words (T.O.W.).

The students have also been brainstorming ideas for Literacy Stations.  We have some criteria for 'Read to Self', 'Read with a Partner', 'Word Work' and 'Writer's Workshop'.

If anybody has any old computer keyboards they are not using, we would love to have them for our Word Work station.  Thanks so much!

In Math, we continue to collect data, organize data and create pictographs and bar graphs.  Next week the Grade 3 students will be collecting data on how the other students at St. Cecilia get home from school.  We are also practicing our Mental Math strategies, representing numbers in a variety of ways including modelling with Base Ten Blocks.  Today at Math Stations, the students worked on representing the same number two different ways using base ten blocks (e.g., 117 could be modelled using one 100s flat, one tens rod and seven ones cubes OR eleven tens rods and seven ones cubs).

In Religion we continue to discuss how our similarities and differences, preferences and place in our family make us who we are.  We know that we must celebrate our differences as that is what makes things interesting!  We have read the story 'God's Dream' and the students have completed the two sentences "God's Dream is..." and "I will make God's Dream come true by...".

Have a wonderful and safe weekend,

Mrs. Caluori
